Untitled: Writing About Painting

Two Tuesdays, April 25 and May 2nd, from 4-5:30 each day.

This workshop will explore the purpose of writing about your own work, and the potential of a well-written artist’s statement. We will dissect the elements of an effective statement, as well as a bad one, and establish some simple guidelines to follow when creating a draft. We will go through the writing and editing process, and learn how to craft a statement that says what you mean. We will also discuss the power of titling your work, and how to approach the question of titles.

After going over the process, you will each go home and write a first draft of an artist's statement, which we will then workshop the following week as a class. You will also receive individual written comments about your drafted statement.

If you have an existing artist’s statement, please bring a copy to the first class, as well as two to four images of current work with or without titles.
